Eight campers between the ages of 13 and 21 attended the inaugural Camp Kids Unlimited last October at Camp for All in Burton, Texas. Sponsored by TIRR Memorial Hermann, the camp offers kids with physical disabilities the opportunity to test their limits, improve their independence and make new friends.
Activities included canoeing, archery, paintball, wheelchair ultimate Frisbee, wheelchair basketball, a ropes course, a scavenger hunt and horseback riding. “The small size of our group allowed kids and staff to be more involved with each other,” says recreational therapist Ava Skrabanek, CTRS, camp director. “The kids got to spend a few days together in a barrier-free camp environment. It’s really wonderful to watch them overcome their fears as they try new things. In the future we’re hoping to see Camp Kids Unlimited grow. This year was a great success, and we want to extend the opportunity to as many as possible.”
For the 35th consecutive year, TIRR Memorial Hermann is recognized as the best rehabilitation hospital in Texas and No. 2 in the nation according to U.S. News and World Report's "Best Rehabilitation Hospitals" in America.
