Accolades

TIRR Memorial Hermann received the Caring Heart Award from the Institute for Spirituality and Health (ISH) in November 2014 at the organization’s Gathering of Friends event. ISH’s mission is to further knowledge of the role spirituality plays in health and healing, and to educate and equip health care professionals to incorporate spirituality in patient care. Hazel Thomas, chaplain, gave the invocation. Speakers included Dan Wolterman, Memorial Hermann president and CEO, Captain Mark Kelly and former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Carl Josehart, Maegan Morrow, MT-BC, NMT, and Deanna Bennett, RN, CRNN, CBIS, accepted the award on behalf of TIRR Memorial Hermann.

Sunil Kothari, MD, is the recipient of the Tom Dean Humanitarian Award, recognizing a Texan who has made exceptional contributions toward the prevention of brain injury or improvement of the quality of life of individuals with brain injuries. Dr. Kothari also received the Texas Brain Injury Association Humanitarian of the Year Award.

Becky Thayer, RN, CRRN, was named Rehabilitation Nurse of the Year by the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses Southeast Texas Chapter.

Monique R. Pappadis, PhD, was elected the 2014-2016 Early Career Chair of the BI-ISIG Executive Committee of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM). She is the recipient of the highly competitive 2014-2016 NIH-NIMHD Health Disparities Loan Repayment Program Award and the Girls and Women with ABI Task Force’s 2014 Early Career Poster Award at the 2014 ACRM Conference.

Differential Diagnosis & Management of Acquired Dysarthrias

Joseph R. Duffy, PhD, will address the neurologic substrates, differential diagnosis and management of acquired dysarthrias. Dr. Duffy is a member of the division of Speech Pathology in the department of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic and a professor at Mayo College of Medicine. He is the author of three editions of the book Motor Speech Disorders: Substrates, Differential Diagnosis, and Management, and a member of the Certification Board of the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS) and of ANCDS Practice Guidelines committees for dysarthrias and apraxia of speech. He is a fellow in the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and has been awarded the Honors of ASHA. Registration: 7:30 a.m. Course: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Advancing Best Practices for Brain Injury Rehabilitation

June 5-7, 2015

The Westin Houston Downtown

Presented by TIRR Memorial Hermann Brain Injury and Stroke Program members, this conference will examine collaborative team processes for professionals who serve those with brain injury, spanning the continuum of care from inpatient treatment to community reintegration. Sessions will focus on medical perspectives, contextualized memory interventions, behavior management programs and spasticity treatment, with collaborative team breakout sessions across disciplines. Course hours: Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
