Rising Need for Maternal Health Care

The latest Maternal and Infant Health Report released in 2024 by Harris County Public Health1 unveiled concerning statistics in Harris County. From 2016 to 2020, the maternal mortality rate among Black women was recorded at 65 deaths per 100,000 live births, which is more than twice the overall county rate of 29 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Furthermore, the report highlights a growing trend in health disparities among all women, prepregnancy, particularly concerning diabetes and hypertension management. Prepregnancy health encompasses a woman's health status before or in preparation for conception. In Harris County, the incidence of diabetes among women prepregnancy increased from 5.96 per 1,000 live births in 2017 to 8.96 per 1,000 live births in 2020. The health status of women prior to pregnancy can significantly influence the health outcomes of their newborns and overall mortality rates. Align these startling statistics with the recent March of Dimes report2 that assigned Harris County a grade of “D” for preterm birth, emphasizing the need to make maternal and women’s care more accessible.
