Audience

This program is designed for athletic trainers, physical therapists, physicians and other professionals responsible for the treatment and prevention of injuries sustained by competitive and recreational athletes.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the symposium, participants should be able to:

  • Explain appropriate care strategies for various injuries to the eye
  • Create a core strength and stabilization training program for the physically active
  • Develop a mobilization plan for the athletic spine
  • Explain the evaluation and treatment of ligamentous injury to the elbow
  • Identify a differential diagnosis causing neck pain in young athletes
  • Evaluate vascular efficiency in the student-athlete
  • Apprise patients of the benefits and weaknesses of using collagen supplementation in sports
  • Give examples of signs, symptoms and mechanism of injury/ailments affecting internal organs
  • Explain various benefits, complications and applications of cryotherapy
  • Interpret gait analysis to aid in the reduction of overuse injuries
  • Perform and interpret the results of a wrist examination that indicate referral to a physician
  • Recognize injuries to the epiphyseal plates in the physically active
  • Develop and implement a communication template for the athletic trainer, physical therapist, coach and athlete
  • Give examples of mobility exercises, progressions and regressions appropriate for athletes dealing with hip flexor injuries
  • Describe the principles of muscle inhibition following injury

Continuing Education

Memorial Hermann | Rockets Sports Medicine Institute is recognized by the Board of Certification Inc. to offer continuing education for certified athletic trainers. Application has been made to the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners for approval as a Continuing Competence Activity for PT's and PTAs. This symposium if offering 16.0 hours of continuing education.
