Neonatology

In 2013, House Bill 15 was passed to create level of care designations for hospitals that provide neonatal and maternal services. The purpose of the bill was to develop initial rules for neonatal/maternal level of care designation. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has the authority to designate facilities. The Office of EMS/Trauma Systems Section of DSHS works with hospitals, survey organizations and the Perinatal Advisory Council (PAC) to:

  • Develop facility designation protocols,
  • Develop policies, and
  • Designate facilities in the state.

Neonatology Leveling by Level of Care

Memorial Hermann currently has 10 facilities designated as Neonatal Facilities. The following Memorial Hermann facilities are designated by Level of Care:

Maternal Leveling

In 2013, House Bill 15 was passed during the 83rd Legislature, Regular Session. The purpose of the bill was to develop initial rules for level of care designations for hospitals that provide maternal services.

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has the authority to designate facilities. The EMS/Trauma Systems Section of DSHS works with hospitals, Perinatal Care Regions (PCRs) and the Perinatal Advisory Council (PAC) to:

  • Improve maternal patient care and outcomes,
  • Develop hospital requirements for facility designation, and
  • Establish regional coordination of maternal care.

The Red Duke Trauma Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center features 200 total beds and sees an average of 5,871 adult and 1,197 pediatric trauma cases per year.  As one of the nation’s busiest Level I Trauma Centers, Memorial Hermann-TMC is committed to delivering high-reliability, high-quality care to the Gulf Coast region, ensuring that communities have access to advanced trauma care when they need it the most.

Surgical Services

American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program

The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®) has recognized 78 hospitals out of an eligible 609 hospitals participating in the adult program for achieving meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care in 2022. Hospitals participating in ACS NSQIP are required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures; these outcomes are then analyzed by ACS and reported back to the hospitals. These results inform patient safety initiatives within the hospital and impact the quality of surgical care for all patients.

Three Memorial Hermann hospitals scored high marks for safety, earning an "A" grade for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, an independent, national nonprofit organization run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.
