As thousands of fans prepare to enjoy the FIFA World Cup games and fan festivals around the country – including many visitors unfamiliar with the extreme summer temperatures in host cities like Houston, Miami, and Atlanta – it’s critical for fans to understand the health risks of high heat. 

Dr. Wahaj Aman, interventional cardiologist with Memorial Hermann and UTHealth Houston, explains the “perfect storm” of cardiac risks that may occur in attendees who spend too much time in the heat, especially if consuming alcohol. These two factors combined can lead to sudden arrhythmia, heat stroke, and even heart attack.
