In April 2025, 78-year-old Chuck Howell woke up in the middle of the night feeling strange, and eventually found himself on the floor. When he commanded his left arm to help push himself up, it wasn’t reacting the way it should. It didn’t register at the time that Howell was having a stroke, but the quick reaction of his immediate family eventually helped get him to the experts at Memorial Hermann who were able to help him fully recover.

During a grateful holiday season, Howell, now 79 years old, penned a note to Malisha Patel, SVP and CEO of Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital – the leader of the campuses where Howell was treated. In the note, Howell thanked the care team that helped him recover so that he could now be enjoying time with his family in good health.

We captured video of Howell enjoying time with his wife, Linda, as well as sound of him reading the letter aloud. Malisha Patel was also interviewed to share response to the letter.
