Meet the newest security officers keeping patients and visitors safe at select Memorial Hermann campuses!

Memorial Hermann is amongst the first health systems in the state of Texas to implement K-9 security officers. The two dogs, Heli and Rex, have been on the job for about two weeks now. Heli, a Sable German Shepherd, can be found at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center, while Rex, a German Shepherd, can be found at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. Both dogs are stationed in the emergency departments of their respective campuses, but have the ability to go where needed. Both dogs have been trained since they were puppies specifically to locate firearms and explosives, as well as solvents and lubricants used to clean firearms. Within their first few weeks on the job there have already been multiple indications from the dogs, so both dogs are already performing their duties just as hoped for.

In this video package Heli does a demonstration in the halls of the security offices at Memorial Hermann Memorial City where she identifies a bag with a firearm inside of it. These highly trained and responsive canines are here to keep people feeling safe, as well as lower anxiety amongst caregivers and lower instances of workplace violence against caregivers.
