There wasn’t a dry eye in the room at Children’s Memorial Hermann as 4-year-old Amelia Almahmoud-Mendez marched down the red carpet and rang the bell, signifying the end of her 2.5 year cancer journey. Amelia was surrounded by dozens of family members, friends, and caregivers who cheered her on and waved pom-poms. She wore her best white dress, smiling from ear to ear as she posed for pictures with her nurses and family.
Amelia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a fast-growing blood cancer that starts in the bone marrow. She underwent treatment for over two years, during which her parents say she never dropped her smile. In fact, her dad Bashar says that her strength and happiness is what kept them all going.
Now that she has conquered cancer, Amelia is ready for any challenge. Her next big adventure: kindergarten! She is preparing to start school this August, and couldn’t be more excited.
