Mark Barr, an anesthesiologist at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, is heading to the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

At age 14, Barr was diagnosed with bone cancer. He underwent a year of chemotherapy, lung surgery, and, unfortunately, had one of his legs amputated above the knee. He went on to swim at Cal-Poly University for four years and he swam in his first Paralympic Games in 2004 in Athens and then again in 2008 in Beijing. He retired swimming and decided to take on another challenge – triathlons. He started doing triathlons to stay in shape, but when it became a Paralympic event, he set new Olympic goals. He placed fourth in Rio in 2018 and this year he will compete in the Paralympic Games in Paris where hopes for a higher finish.
