Neuroendovascular Care at Memorial City

Through a collaborative effort between the Memorial Hermann Mischer Neuroscience Institute at the Texas Medical Center and the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, Mischer Neuroscience Associates (MNA) is extending its endovascular expertise and capabilities to Memorial City and other key suburban locations. At Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center, MNA provides endovascular services for patients under treatment for cerebrovascular disorders, now offering access to diagnostic angiography in the West Houston area.

Diagnostic angiography is an imaging study, performed under sedation, used to visualize the flow of blood through the vessels in the head and neck using a small catheter inserted in the groin, and contrast (dye) to detect abnormalities.

Through MNA’s affiliation with the Memorial Hermann Mischer Neuroscience Institute at the Texas Medical Center, more acute patients may be treated at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. Interventions include endovascular surgery for complex conditions of the brain, such as aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, skull base tumors and stroke.

Neuro-ICU and Inpatient Neurological Care

Memorial Hermann Memorial City houses the only dedicated neuro-intensive care unit (ICU) in west Houston, integrating the entire spectrum of acute to critical care. With 19 beds dedicated to intensive and acute care, the unit provides a carefully coordinated continuum of care for critically ill patients from admission to discharge. Expansion plans are underway to increase to 40 beds in 2016.

The ICU team includes affiliated critical-care and fellowship trained neurologists and neurosurgeons; advanced practice providers (nurse practitioners and physician assistants); neuro- and stroke-certified nurses; physical, occupational and speech therapists; respiratory therapists; and a dedicated case manager. They are supported by chaplain services, social workers and a discharge nurse who support patients while they continue on the road to recovery and provide much-needed help for families and caregivers.

Outside of the ICU, in the inpatient units, patients have access to highly trained inpatient neurologists who specialize in critical care, acute neurological conditions, and neurological emergencies such as urgent brain and spine conditions. 24-hour coverage by staff physicians is augmented by a highly skilled nursing staff, many who are Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurses and Stroke Certified Registered Nurses.

A four-member rapid-response nursing team, specially trained in critical and intensive care, is on call 24/7 to aid in emergencies and assist with patient care.

Stroke Care

Stroke is the nation's fifth-leading cause of death and is the primary cause of adult disability. When a stroke occurs, getting expert treatment quickly is critical, as the prognosis for the patient is highly dependent on that variable. As a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the team at Memorial Hermann Memorial City is specially trained to do just that.

Acute Stroke Care

Our skilled stroke teams are comprised of affiliated neurologists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, emergency physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, dieticians, speech and language pathologists and social workers.  The hospitals offer state-of-the-art treatment for any type of acute or hemorrhagic stroke.  Intravenous TPA (tissue plasminogen activator) therapy, a clot-dissolving medication that greatly improves outcomes and long-term recovery, is used for acute stroke patients who qualify.

In addition, our direct connection via telemedicine with the Memorial Hermann Mischer Neuroscience Institute Stroke Center at the Texas Medical Center ensures that patients have every possible resource at hand for quick response and effective treatment.

We employ a full-time, dedicated Stroke Coordinator who helps patients and family members understand clinical terms, manages treatment and post treatment expectations and fosters communication with all members of the care team. To reach the Stroke Coordinator, call 713-242-2905.
