The Neuroscience Program at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital is one of the most advanced of its kind in Houston. Affiliated neurologists and neurosurgeons provide patients round-the-clock access to specialists equipped to diagnose and treat a wide range of neurological illnesses. The multidisciplinary team also includes critical care nurses, a nurse practitioner trained in neurology and other specialized medical support personnel.

The program features a dedicated eight-bed Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, which enables the Memorial Hermann Southwest neurotrauma team to provide effective care and intervention to patients suffering from catastrophic brain injuries and neurological disorders.

Recognized by The Joint Commission (TJC) as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, Memorial Hermann Southwest is equipped to rapidly diagnose and treat stroke victims. We can also evaluate and treat patients transported from other stroke centers.

Our hospital is on a journey toward Level IV Trauma Center verification, which allows Memorial Hermann Southwest to provide high-level neurological care to patients with a wide range of neurotrauma conditions, including head injuries. The Campus is also equipped to provide transport via Life Flight® to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center, as needed.

General Neuroscience Services

At Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, we offer programs and procedures that treat a wide variety of neurological disorders and conditions conveniently in Southwest Houston. Our scope of services includes the diagnosis and/or treatment of:

Comprehensive Stroke Center

Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital has received a Comprehensive Stroke Center certification by The Joint Commission and is the only Comprehensive Stroke Center on the southwest side of Houston. This hospital is also recognized by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Stroke is the nation's fifth-leading cause of death and is the primary cause of adult disability. When a stroke occurs, getting expert treatment quickly is critical, as the prognosis for the patient is highly dependent on that variable. As a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the team at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital is specially trained to do just that.

Our skilled stroke teams are comprised of affiliated neurologists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, emergency physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, dieticians, speech and language pathologists and social workers. The hospitals offer state-of-the-art treatment for any type of acute or hemorrhagic stroke. Alteplase, a clot-dissolving medication that greatly improves outcomes and long-term recovery, is used for acute stroke patients who qualify.

Diagnostic Services

Patients at Memorial Hermann Southwest have access to some of the most advanced diagnostic technologies available, including:

  • 64-slice computed tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • PET/CT scan
  • Electroencephalography(EEG)

As part of the Telemedicine Program at Mischer Neuroscience Institute, we use robot technology that allows physicians to collaborate with each other and view patients from remote locations. Through this innovative device, a patient at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital can be seen by experts at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth.

The Remote Presence System robot is fully portable and equipped with two-way audio/video, allowing physicians to see and hear patients and view monitors and other clinical data firsthand. Medical devices such as a digital stethoscope or pulse oximeter can be plugged into the robot, enabling firsthand remote diagnostics. This reduces the burden on nursing staff to describe or explain subtle changes in a patient's condition. Physicians at our hospital can then consult directly with specialists at Mischer Neuroscience Institute to discuss treatment.
