Recovery of Arm Movement Program
Recovery of Arm Movement Program (RAMP) is a modified constraint induced movement therapy program for individuals with upper extremity weakness. This is an evidence-based program in an enriched environment to enhance the use of the affected upper extremity.
Goals:
- Improve upper extremity function
- Facilitate overall performance in daily living skills, work related tasks, school activities, recreational activities and social participation
- Offer an evidence-based, intensive and therapist-guided practice of movement
- Provide a novel activity-based program
- Enhance motivation through social support
Intervention:
- Provided in a group setting led by an occupational therapist
- Duration: 6 weeks or 8 weeks, depending on the functional level of the client, in 90 minute sessions
- Frequency: 4 times per week
- Daily forced use of the affected upper extremity will be for 5 days a week, 5 hours per day
- Adaptive task practice and repetitive practice of a specific task using the affected upper extremity in a circuit training format
- Includes two month access to Strength Unlimited Open gym sessions

Parkinson’s Exercise Group
The TIRR Memorial Hermann Strength Unlimited® Program offers The Big Strides Parkinson’s Group for individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders who have completed the evidence-based treatment approach, LSVT BIGTM. This exercise group is designed to promote carry-over of exercise principles learned in LSVT BIG, utilizing whole body amplitude-based movements to promote improved posture, strength, flexibility, balance and walking.
Goals:
- Improve posture, strength, flexibility, balance and walking
- Facilitate overall performance in daily living skills, work-related tasks, recreational activities and social participation
- Reinforcement and assistance with daily home exercise program
- Enhance motivation through social support
Intervention:
Provided in a group setting led by a physical therapist and/or exercise physiologist
- Duration: Six weeks, 90 minutes per session
- Frequency: Twice weekly
- Daily home exercise program once per day on Tuesdays/Thursdays, twice per day for the rest of the week.
- Group training format for repetitive practice of whole body amplitude-base movement exercises

Dysautonomia Exercise Program
TIRR Memorial Hermann offers a community-based dysautonomia exercise program including both circuit training and aquatic therapy sessions. This exercise program provides the skills needed to transition successfully to community settings and back to the life you love.
Goals:
- Improve endurance, strength, and aerobic capacity allowing full participation in the community
- Utilize evidence based outcome measures to determine intervention effectiveness
- Provide social interaction within a group setting to participants
Intervention:
- Group exercise led by a fitness trainer
- Duration: 60 minutes per session for 12 weeks
- Frequency: 3x/week: 2x-circuit training, 1x-aquatic therapy
- Intervention: circuit training including lower/upper extremity and core strengthening

Cancer Survivors’ Exercise Program
TIRR Memorial Hermann - Strength Unlimited® Cancer Survivors Exercise Program is a community-based breast cancer exercise program that includes circuit training, restorative exercise, and educational classes. This exercise program provides the skills needed to empower your successful transition to community settings and back to the life you love.
Goals:
- Improve endurance, strength, and aerobic capacity allowing full participation in the community
- Participate in restorative mind and body techniques and exercise, focusing on lymphedema management
- Utilize evidence based outcome measures to determine intervention effectiveness
- Provide social interaction within a group setting to participants
Intervention:
- Group exercise led by a fitness specialist
- Duration: Approximately 75 minutes per session for 6 weeks
- Frequency: 2x/week: 2x strength and endurance training, 1x educational class, 1x yoga/mind – body
Qualifications:
- Cancer Diagnosis
- Lymphedema in upper extremity/ at risk of lymphedema
Schedule:
- Tuesdays: 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. - 45 minutes of education class, 55 minutes of strength and endurance training
- Thursdays: 4:30 - 6 p.m. - 35 minutes of strength and endurance training, 35 minutes of yoga/mind-body

Cancer Wellness Program
The TIRR Memorial Hermann Cancer Wellness Program offers an enriched environment for cancer survivors of all abilities at every phase of their journey. As part of the cancer survivorship care plan, individuals with cancer are given the opportunity to participate in exercise and physical activity to enhance participation in meaningful life roles. Professional fitness specialists will be working closely with the clients through customized exercise programs with monitoring and education.
TIRR Memorial Hermann also offers inpatient and outpatient cancer rehabilitation with expert physical rehabilitation specialists.

The Strength Unlimited® Program offers modified constraint induced movement therapy program for individuals with upper extremity weakness. This is an evidence-based program in an enriched environment to enhance the use of the affected upper extremity.
Goals:
- Improve upper extremity function
- Facilitate overall performance in daily living skills,work related tasks, school activities, recreational activities and social participation
- Offer an evidence-based, intensive and therapist-guided practice of movement
- Provide a novel activity-based program
- Enhance motivation through social support
Intervention:
- Provided in a group setting led by an occupational therapist
- Duration: six weeks or eight weeks, depending on the functional level of the client 1.5 hours per session, four times per week
- Daily forced use of the affected upper extremity will be for 5 days per week, 5 hours per day
- Adaptive task practice and repetitive practice of a specific task using the affected upper extremity in a circuit training format

Upper Extremity Spinal Cord Injury Exercise Program
Upper Extremity SCI Exercise Group is a community-based group program that includes electrical stimulation and various upper extremity functional activities. This exercise program focuses on the importance of selecting exercises related to the individuals’ activity of daily living goals. Participation in this program also allows individuals access to our adaptive Strength Unlimited open gym program.
Goals:
- Improve upper extremity function related to Activities of Daily Living
- Utilize the latest research for clients success
Intervention:
- Group exercise led by Fitness Specialist with an Occupational Therapist oversight
- 1 hour individual evaluation with Occupational Therapist for custom treatment plan
- Duration: Approximately 60 minutes per session
- Frequency: 3x a week with one time open gym practice sessions for continued improvements
Qualifications:
- Cervical Levels C5-C7
- Sub Acute Phase: Complete or Incomplete
- Chronic: Incomplete only
- Ability to demonstrate safe exercise principles

Brain Injury Adaptive Dance Program
Strength Unlimited® Adaptive Dance program is a community-based group program that includes a modified dance intervention tailored to each individual’s needs. This exercise program focuses on improving balance, postural control, body awareness, coordination and quality of life. Participation in this program also allows individuals access to our adaptive Strength Unlimited open gym program.
Goals:
- Reduce fall risk
- Improve balance
- Improve quality of life
Intervention:
- Group dance led by Fitness Specialist with Physical Therapist oversight
- 1 hour individual evaluation with Physical Therapist for custom treatment plan
- Modifications provided by Physical Therapist
- Duration: Approximately 60 minutes per session
- Frequency: 2x a week for 6 weeks
Qualifications:
- Brain Injury diagnoses: including CVA, ABI, TBI
- Ability to demonstrate safe exercise principles

A physician referral is needed to participate in any of the Strength Unlimited services and special programs. The first scheduled appointment will include an orientation to the program, staff and facility.
