Memorial Hermann | Rockets Orthopedics has created a unique model of care for treating knee conditions and injuries. We combine the expertise of affiliated orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists, armed with significant research that has been conducted at our facilities and at other notable institutions, to guide treatments that have been shown to be most effective. Plus, our entire team, including those researchers, works together in the same building, making collaboration easier and providing you with the convenience of one visit.
It starts with an evaluation of your knee using X-rays and MRI, along with tools to measure functionality, strength, range of motion, power and agility. You are also surveyed about your injury and your performance goals to determine how you perceive the impact of the injury on your life.
With the data collected during the initial evaluation, the physical therapy and research team examines existing research, gathered from global studies and locally from our Knee Preservation Program over the past decade, and consults with the orthopedic surgeon to recommend an effective treatment plan. The plan also takes into consideration each patient’s lifestyle, desire to return to activity, expectations of a reasonable recovery timeline and perceived quality of life.
Skilled Memorial Hermann-affiliated orthopedic surgeons then use advanced surgical tools and techniques to repair damage to tissues and bones of the knee. Meanwhile, Memorial Hermann’s researchers continue to collect data during surgery to ensure the post-operative rehabilitation plan will keep pace with the desired outcomes. The team also follows patients at 12, 24, 36 and 52 weeks after surgery to track recovery progress and make any necessary adjustments to the plan to ensure optimum outcomes.
Once you reach a year after surgery, your treatment is considered completed, but researchers will check in with you, by phone, at two years, three years, five years and 10 years. This allows researchers to track return-to-sport times, long-term outcomes and re-injury rates to contribute to clinical understanding of these injuries and effective treatments.
The research conducted by Memorial Hermann | Rockets Orthopedics Knee Preservation Program has revealed that approximately 80% of patients who follow this advanced interdisciplinary program return to their sport within two years of beginning treatment. Comparatively, the national average of patients returning to their sport within two years is 65%.
