What is a Stent?

Stents are used to keep blocked arteries open, allowing for normal blood flow through the heart. Stenting is usually performed at the same time as an angioplasty. Once the balloon catheter is deflated and removed after the angioplasty, the stent stays in place to keep the artery open.

Specialized Expertise

Physicians affiliated with Memorial Hermann have a high level of expertise in carotid and multivessel stenting. Stents are used after angioplasty to keep the artery open. Our use of drug-eluting stents releases a medication that prevents scarring after insertion and helps prevent restenosis, blockage of the treated vessel.

About the Procedure

Coil wires are inserted through a catheter and into the aneurysm. Once they are released from the catheter, the coils expand, filling the ballooned-out space of the aneurysm. This blocks the abnormal blood flow in the aneurysm, which keeps it from growing any larger and rupturing.
