If you’re experiencing restless sleep, you may be suffering from more than just fatigue. An at-home sleep study is a convenient and effective way to diagnose specific sleep disorders, while allowing you to be tested in the comfort and privacy of your own bed. The sleep specialists affiliated with Memorial Hermann Sleep Disorders Centers are experienced in using at-home testing to gather important information about your sleep and help identify a path toward better rest.
An at-home sleep study is a simple and effective screening tool for many people. Your health care provider may recommend an at-home study if you are 18 or older and they suspect you may have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
At-home sleep studies are generally not recommended for individuals with complex medical conditions such as moderate to severe lung disease, congestive heart failure or neuromuscular diseases.
Obstructive sleep apnea affects millions of Americans. Common symptoms include snoring or waking up while choking or gasping for air.
With OSA, the throat muscles relax while asleep, causing the air passages to narrow and restrict the flow of oxygen. This causes a constant stopping and starting of breathing. When the brain senses this disordered breathing, it sends a signal to the body to wake up in order to get more oxygen.
If you qualify for an at-home sleep study, a member of our sleep medicine team will review the order and discuss the equipment options available to you. Depending on what is most appropriate, the device can then be picked up from one of our Sleep Disorders Centers or mailed to your home.
We use state-of-the-art, noninvasive equipment such as disposable and reusable devices that collect sleep data for analysis. The equipment is designed for easy self-application and will include detailed set-up instructions for your convenience. Once you set up the device, you can simply go to sleep as you typically would.
Once your at-home sleep study is complete, the recorded data is sent to our sleep specialists to be reviewed. Our team will analyze the information and compile a detailed report. This report is then sent to your referring health care provider, typically within 7 to 10 business days.
If it is confirmed you have a sleep disorder, a sleep specialist will discuss the results with you and determine the right treatment option for you.
A health care provider's referral is required to undergo any sleep study. Most insurance plans cover at-home sleep studies when ordered by a health care provider with supporting medical documentation.
If you or a loved one show signs of a sleep disorder, the dedicated sleep-medicine specialists at Memorial Hermann can conduct an evaluation. If an at-home sleep test is a good option for your specific health needs, we can coordinate the testing equipment and provide you with the directions you need to perform the test in the comfort of your home.
