family smiling in hospital bedFor Cynthia Ramirez and her husband, Kent Toledo, choosing where to deliver their children was easy. After a wonderful experience welcoming their first baby at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center, the decision to return for their second delivery with the same trusted physician felt like coming home.

Their story is one of trust, familiarity and full-circle moments, rooted in the hospital where they met, grew their family and welcomed both of their sons into the world.

Where Their Story Began and Continued

Some people meet at work and move on. Cynthia, an occupational therapist, and Kent, a physical therapist, met as colleagues in 2021 at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center in Houston, and that connection changed everything.

From then on, they only had eyes for each other.

They married and built a life together in Webster, Texas. And, when it was time to expand their family a few years later, they decided to trust one of their own, Anne Gonzalez, MD, an affiliated OB/GYN at Memorial Hermann Memorial City to guide Cynthia through her first pregnancy.

Lucas Daniel made his entrance into the world on June 17, 2023. Cynthia’s pregnancy, labor and delivery went smoothly, reinforcing the couple’s confidence in their care team and the hospital as a whole. Soon after, they brought Lucas home and settled into life as new parents.

By early 2025, both Cynthia, 34, and Kent, 32, had moved on from the roles that first brought them together at Memorial Hermann Memorial City. Cynthia now works at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital and Kent completed the physical therapy residency program at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center (TMC) and accepted a position there.

But when it came time to grow their family again, their choice was immediate.

Regardless of where they worked, Cynthia and Kent agreed they would return to Memorial Hermann Memorial City and to Dr. Gonzalez for the birth of their second child.

“Our first experience went so well, we didn’t want to have our second child anywhere other than the place we met and welcomed our first son,” Cynthia said.

Confidence in Care

Choosing an OB/GYN is one of the most important decisions a growing family can make. When Cynthia became pregnant with her first child, she spent time researching physicians before selecting Dr. Gonzalez, a decision she now knows was the right one.

“Dr. Gonzalez has a very steady presence and that really impressed me from the start,” Cynthia said. “I value her experience, her approach and the way she presents information. She’s straightforward and clear but always leads with kindness.”

From the beginning, Dr. Gonzalez understood the couple’s dynamic—Cynthia’s natural tendency to plan for every scenario balanced by Kent’s calm demeanor. That partnership carried through both pregnancies.

“As soon as we met Dr. Gonzalez, we could tell she was the right fit for both of us,” Cynthia said.

A Carefully Planned Second Delivery

During Cynthia’s first pregnancy, she experienced gestational diabetes later in the third trimester and Lucas arrived two weeks early.

With that history in mind, Dr. Gonzalez took a proactive approach during Cynthia’s second pregnancy. At the earliest signs of gestational diabetes again, Dr. Gonzalez recommended induction two weeks early to support a safer and more controlled delivery.

“Continuity of care plays an important role in pregnancy and delivery,” Dr. Gonzalez said. “Cynthia and Kent already knew what to expect and that familiarity allowed us to focus on personalized planning and a calm, coordinated birth experience. That level of trust makes a difference for families.”

Mateo was originally due Dec. 15, 2025, but his birthday was set for Nov. 26, 2025, the day before Thanksgiving.

Cynthia and Kent arrived at Memorial Hermann Memorial City the night before and induction began early Wednesday morning. Even though she was scheduled to be off for the holiday, Dr. Gonzalez remained closely involved, checking on Cynthia throughout the day and monitoring her progress.

Labor and Delivery nurses Chloe and Joy made a lasting impression. “They were so thoughtful and compassionate. They were there for me all day long,” Cynthia said.

After 12 hours of labor, Cynthia was ready to push. Just 20 minutes later, Mateo Nicolas was placed in her arms. He weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 20¼ inches long.

“He was perfect,” Cynthia said.

A Calm, Supportive Birth Experience

Cynthia said she appreciated the clear plan and thoughtful guidance throughout her delivery, especially when Dr. Gonzalez recommended induction after she showed signs of gestational diabetes. “Knowing the plan up front kept me relaxed,” she said. “Even while getting the epidural, I felt supported every step of the way.”

That sense of calm among the doctors and nurses stood out to both Cynthia and Kent, especially given their own health care backgrounds. “As caregivers ourselves, we understand how vulnerable patients feel,” Cynthia said. “Choosing caregivers who offer steady guidance really helps everyone involved. Every member of the Memorial Hermann Memorial City team treated us with patience, compassion and reassurance. They even extended that same care to our visiting family members, which meant so much to us.”

The couple also appreciated how the care team explained each step while allowing space when needed for the expectant parents to be alone at times throughout labor. “Kent told me he never felt like he had to focus on the medical side of things,” Cynthia said. “He knew we were in great hands, so we could focus on us being the patients.”

For Dr. Gonzalez, that sense of trust and partnership is central to the care she strives to provide, especially when caring for a family through more than one pregnancy. “It was incredibly meaningful to care for Cynthia through both of her pregnancies,” Dr. Gonzalez said. “When a family returns for a second delivery, it speaks to the trust that has been built. Working with Cynthia and Kent was truly a partnership from planning and education to delivery, and my goal both times was to help them feel informed, supported and confident every step of the way.”

Two Sons, One Special Place

Today, Cynthia and Kent’s home is filled with laughter, little voices and plenty of toys. Lucas, now 2 years old, loves being outside, climbing and racing around, and proudly embraces his role as a big brother.

Before Mateo was born, Lucas hugged Cynthia’s belly and talked to his baby brother. Now, he loves holding Mateo and helping whenever he can.

“If Mateo gets fussy, Lucas can hold him and he settles down almost instantly,” Cynthia said. “We’re already seeing the bond we hoped for.”

While they aren’t sure how many children their family may include one day, Cynthia and Kent are certain about one thing.

If they welcome another baby, Memorial Hermann Memorial City will be their hospital of choice.

“We know how lucky we’ve been,” Cynthia said. “We’re incredibly grateful for the compassionate care we received—not once, but twice. We felt completely safe during both pregnancies and deliveries.”

She added, “If anything had gone wrong, we trusted Dr. Gonzalez and the nurses to handle it without hesitation. That level of trust is why we returned. Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center isn’t just where we met. It’s where we met both of our sons for the first time. The care is patient-centered, compassionate and advanced.”
