Patients riding bicyclesThe primary purpose of Therapeutic Recreation is to restore, remediate and rehabilitate a person’s level of functioning and independence in life activities to promote health and wellness as well as reduce or eliminate activity limitations (ATRA). Therapeutic Recreation is individualized to each person by his or her past, present and future interests and works to address physical, cognitive, emotional, social and leisure needs.

Who is appropriate?

TIRR Memorial Hermann patients (inpatient and outpatient) who have acquired a disability and would benefit from recreational therapy.

Initial Assessment

Individuals are assessed with an interview to determine personal goals and past, present and future recreational interests.

Therapeutic Recreation Services

Leisure Education and Counseling

  • Laws, rights and self-advocacy

  • Modified transportation and air travel
  • Community support resources
  • Meaning and benefits of wellness and recreation
  • Positive coping skills

Leisure Skill Instruction

  • Exploring positive recreational interests
  • Adaptive equipment
  • Adaptive techniques and activity modifications

Community Reintegration Outings

Community reintegration opportunities allow participants and their families to establish skills that will transfer to their real life situation. The patient can be involved in group and individual outings to local resources including museums, festivals, retail stores, restaurants, parks and universities. The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist applies all leisure education and skills instruction, while assisting the individual and family as they return to their community. The Specialist acts as guide and will establish connections with external, community resources as needed.
