Children suffering from an emergent neurological condition, such as an aneurysm or a traumatic brain injury, are racing against time. The likelihood of permanent secondary damage to the brain or even death increases exponentially with each passing hour, and early intervention at a medical center that can provide the highest level of emergent neurological care is critical.
The multidisciplinary team at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital stands at the ready when every second counts. The affiliated physicians are leaders in treating aneurysms, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Those individuals with acute neurological injuries benefit from our affiliation with the Red Duke Trauma Institute, Memorial Hermann’s Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and one of the busiest trauma centers in the nation.
After suffering a traumatic brain injury, Garrett was transported to the Children’s Neuroscience Center at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital for life-saving care.
The Children’s Neuroscience Center at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital is affiliated with the Mischer Neuroscience Institute and McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. The Institute is home to Houston’s first dedicated onsite stroke team, the leading epilepsy program in the southwestern United States, and countless innovations in neurotrauma, spine surgery, brain tumors and more. Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital provides a full continuum of high level care for neurological patients. The hospital’s dedicated neuroscience team offers patients intermediate nursing care specifically tailored to our pediatric neuroscience patients. This enables the team to provide complex care, neurological exams, and specialized treatment. Patients needing surgery are quickly triaged and routed to the OR. The hospital continues patient care through outpatient neurorehabilitation at leading facilities in the Greater Houston area.
In collaboration with McGovern Medical School, investigators at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital are participating in multicenter and single-center clinical trials that improve treatment for patients who cannot be treated elsewhere.
Among some of the current research studies under way are infusions for children with recurrent malignant fourth ventricular brain tumors, nonoperative management of cell histiocytosis, radiation-induced malignancies in shunts, and noninvasive diagnostic procedures. Investigators are also seeking to increase the effect of standard-of-care treatment exploring selective dorsal rhizotomy, epilepsy and syringomyela.
The pediatric neuroscience pod at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital offers patients dedicated intermediate nursing care specifically tailored to their needs. This enables Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital to provide complex care, neurological exams and specialized treatment. The nursing staff is also chemotherapy certified and able to provide infusions to patients without moving them to another location.
