However, for pregnant moms seeking a blend of compassionate care, comprehensive services and convenient access – like Jenny Ureche, who was preparing to deliver her third baby – the Women's Services at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital stands out.

As Jenny's pregnancy progressed, she was looking for a new labor and delivery experience that differed from her first two babies, who were both delivered in a larger, less personalized environment.

"Having a baby is so personal, and I really wanted Jack's birth to feel special and centered around our family," Jenny shared. "Since we live in the Oak Forest neighborhood, my husband and I were looking for a place to deliver Jack that was close to home and easy to navigate but didn't compromise on quality care. After Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital was suggested to me by one of my long-term physicians, we quickly set up a tour to see everything they had to offer."

First impressions of comprehensive maternity services

"When we first walked into the labor and delivery (L&D) unit at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights, everything felt right. It was so clean and quiet, and not too busy, which really put us at ease," Jenny said. "The rooms were spacious, and seeing how everything was conducted so professionally during our pre-op visit made it easy to trust that we were in good hands."

One aspect of the L&D unit that comforted Jenny was that it was designed so mothers and their new babies could stay together right from the start, creating a nurturing environment conducive to bonding and recovery. The 30-bed unit is also equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including a dedicated cesarean section suite ready to handle emergent needs.

"Based on the wide range of services offered, it was clear that the labor and delivery team was prepared to provide holistic support to our family throughout the childbirth experience," Jenny added.

Recently recognized as High Performing in Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy) by U.S. News & World Report, Memorial Hermann Greater Heights stands out for its commitment to quality. The L&D unit offers all patients the following services:

  • Prenatal classes and seminars: These courses cover a variety of topics including childbirth preparation and parenting skills, helping expectant parents get ready for the arrival of their baby.
  • Lactation counseling: Experienced lactation consultants are available to assist mothers new to breastfeeding
  • Educational programs: These programs provide information on postpartum and newborn care, helping parents gain confidence and knowledge.
  • Spacious postpartum and antepartum rooms: Designed for comfort and privacy, these rooms allow families to recover and bond together in a serene environment.

In addition, the affiliated medical team and hospital staff are trained in all aspects of childbirth, including high-risk obstetrics. While Jenny and Jack didn't require these specialized services, knowing they were available provided the Ureches with peace of mind.

"After our tour, we felt so confident in the level of care we'd receive that we scheduled Jack's delivery before even leaving the hospital," Jenny said. "Every staff member we encountered, from the nurses to the doctors to the reception team, and every part of the facility we saw was five stars. We knew that it was the right place for Baby Jack to be born."

The big day: Welcoming Jack into the world

The day of Jack's arrival was filled with a mix of anticipation and calm for the Ureche family, which includes Jack's two older sisters, Bailey (then nine years old) and Ellie (then four years old). Jenny especially appreciated how the team made sure to involve Bailey and Ellie in the day's events, making it an even more special celebration for the family.

"During a previous labor with one of my daughters, I experienced complications from my epidural, which left me quite anxious about anesthesia this time around," Jenny shared. "But our anesthesiologist was there right when we needed him, ensuring the process was exceptionally smooth and reassuring, which really helped put my mind at ease. The nursing staff was also fantastic. One of the nurses was with us during the early stages, and even after her shift ended, she came back just to meet Jack. It was incredibly touching to see her go out of her way to check on us and tell us how adorable she thought Jack was."

Although his delivery was mostly smooth, Jack didn’t cry right after he was born, which was momentarily concerning for his parents. However, the medical team's professionalism shone through as they quickly and calmly managed the situation, and within seconds, they helped Jack let out his first cry. The team efficiently took his vitals and provided clear explanations, and their ability to maintain a reassuring atmosphere was incredibly comforting for everyone involved. This allowed Jack to stay in the room for skin-to-skin contact with Jenny, which was really important to her.

Witnessing the initial connection between Jenny and Jack, especially after the initial concern when Jack didn't cry, was truly meaningful for the medical team. It reflects the dedication of everyone at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights – to provide high-quality medical care in a supportive environment where new families can begin their journey.

Being close to home allowed Jack's big sisters and grandparents to be included. They were able to hold Jack in the hospital room, creating a special memory for the family. Having the girls help dress him in his coming-home outfit and taking the first family photo on the bed was a moment of pure joy for the family.

Jack passed all his initial tests successfully, and the family was able to leave after just one night. The only time Jack was away from his family was briefly for his circumcision, which is standard practice for safety reasons.

The Ureche family’s birth experience was a balance of personal touch with professional care. It was more than just delivering a baby; it involved welcoming a new life into the family with affection, careful attention and experienced medical support.

Back at home, Jack's presence has been a joyful addition to the Ureche family. From the initial moment when they thought they were having a third girl, to the delightful surprise of a boy, every step in the journey has been memorable. "We were all set for pink, but having Jack – a sweet, easygoing boy who has his sisters absolutely adoring him – has been wonderful," Jenny added. "His sisters love to dote on him, dressing him up and showing him off, making every day a little celebration of his arrival."

According to his parents, Jack's easygoing nature has made him an ideal third child, consistently cheerful and charming everyone with his sweet demeanor. He has been such a content baby that it's hard for the family to recall what their routine was like before his arrival.

Reflecting on their birth experience, Jenny doesn't hesitate when considering the future. "If we were to have a fourth child, we'd go back to Memorial Hermann Greater Heights in a heartbeat. The care was impeccable, and the convenience of being so close to home and the girls' school made everything so much easier."
