At just 17 years old, Angel Maldonado’s life changed in an instant when a car accident resulted in a spinal cord injury. After spending several months recovering from the initial trauma, Angel came to TIRR Memorial Hermann to begin the next phase of his journey through inpatient rehabilitation. Working closely with a dedicated team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, physicians, and rehabilitation specialists, Angel focused on rebuilding function and gaining greater independence.
However, rehabilitation means caring for more than just physical needs. Through the Psychology and Neurophysiology Program at TIRR Memorial Hermann, Angel received crucial support as he adjusted emotionally and mentally to the significant changes brought on by his spinal cord injury.
During his time at TIRR Memorial Hermann, Angel formed a profound relationship with Jacob Williams, Ph.D., director of the Psychology and Neurophysiology Program. That connection would have an impact extending far beyond his physical rehabilitation.
Through their deep conversations and work together, Angel discovered a fascination with psychology. He began to see how his own lived experiences could someday help him support others facing serious injuries, disabilities, and major life changes. Dr. Williams and the neuropsychology team did not just help Angel adapt—they helped him discover a new calling.
As his independence grew, so did his goals. Angel returned to school and began pursuing his education in psychology, turning an interest that developed during his own recovery into a passion for helping others.
Recently, Angel successfully graduated with his bachelor’s degree in psychology and is currently pursuing his master’s degree. His journey reflects TIRR Memorial Hermann’s approach to rehabilitation as care for the whole person—supporting not only physical recovery and independence, but also the psychological needs that shape life after a serious injury.
