General Information
Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital offers multidisciplinary inpatient medical rehabilitation. The hospital’s inpatient center is designed to help patients reach optimal functionality following an injury or illness. Personal performance goals are incorporated into a customized rehabilitation treatment program. As a member of the Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Network affiliated with TIRR Memorial Hermann, continuously ranked as one of the best rehabilitation hospitals in the nation and best in Texas by U.S. News and World Report, we are committed to bringing world class rehabilitation to Greater Houston.
Services We Offer
The following patients may be appropriate for one of the Memorial Hermann Community Inpatient Rehabilitation Units:
- Stroke
- Non-traumatic brain injury
- Neurological disorders such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and other disorders of the nervous system
- Neuromuscular disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis
- General Rehabilitation (including debility)
- Cancer rehabilitation
- Medically complex patients with multi-system disorders
- Non-traumatic spinal cord injury
- Orthopedic conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fractures or complicated joint replacements
- Amputation
- Medical trauma
- Spinal surgery with neurological impairment
Individualized Treatment Program
An individualized and comprehensive treatment program is designed by the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) interdisciplinary team to meet the specific needs of each patient. The inpatient rehabilitation team consists of the physicians, the patient, the family, physical therapists, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologist, social worker, case managers, clinical dietitian and 24-hour nursing services.
An individualized rehabilitation program is developed to promote independence and safety so that the patient can return to a productive and fulfilling life. The PM&R physician collaborates with the patient’s other physicians.

Admission Criteria
Patients admitted to the inpatient unit will be 18 years of age or older. Patients must be medically able to participate in a comprehensive rehabilitation program. Patients may have concomitant conditions either independent of or resulting from the illness or injury. Examples include, but are not limited to, visual or hearing impairments. Accommodations will be made to meet these needs as best as possible.
- Patients must be able (or have potential within a reasonable amount of time) to tolerate at least three hours of therapy per day.
- Patients with acute, infectious, and/or communicable disease are not routinely admitted.
- Patients must have the physical and/or mental potential to benefit from the program.
- Patients are admitted to the program in accordance with the admission procedures. The patient’s degree of impairment must be sufficient to require inpatient hospitalization.
