Valerie Alvarado is a board-certified advanced practice nurse practitioner (APRN FNP-C) who specializes in family medicine. She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).

As a primary care provider, she diagnoses acute and chronic medical conditions, develops treatment plans, evaluates test results and educates patients and families about medical conditions and treatment plans. Her primary clinical interests are chronic and acute disease management in seniors, adults and adolescents.

A fluent Spanish speaker, Valerie became a nurse practitioner because she wanted to expand access to high-quality care for non-English speaking patients, while enhancing provider-patient communication and ensuring greater choice and patient satisfaction. One of the best parts of practicing medicine, she believes, is getting to make a difference in the lives of others and contributing to a healthier world.

Her approach to care focuses on physical comfort as well as emotional well-being. Her goal is to incorporate the values, preferences and objectives of each patient into clinical decision-making and outcome assessments. She wants her patients to trust her with their care and to think of her as someone who listens and is empathetic to their concerns.

Valerie, who lives in northwest Houston, is a member of the Hispanic Nurses Association. In her spare time, she enjoys exercising, completing DIY projects and traveling with her family—especially to seaside destinations.
