Get With the Guidelines® - Stroke Silver Plus was awarded to:
Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.
“For one hospital to achieve an American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines Stroke Quality award is great. However, for 10 hospitals within the same organization to be simultaneously recognized with AHA’s high levels of quality stroke care is truly outstanding,” said Memorial Hermann’s System Stroke Program Director Sandi Shaw. “These awards exemplify Memorial Hermann’s commitment to providing stroke patients with the most appropriate treatment. From the moment patients with stroke symptoms arrive at our hospital emergency rooms, teams of specialized clinicians work quickly to care for them because every second counts when you’re working to save millions of brain cells.”
Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the AHA and American Stroke Association (ASA) to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest research- and evidence-based guidelines. Get With The Guidelines - Stroke is an in-hospital program for improving stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to these guidelines, which can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.
In addition to AHA Get With The Guidelines, the following campuses received the AHA’s Target: StrokeSM awards for meeting specific criteria that reduces the time between an eligible patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with thrombolytic therapy.

Memorial Hermann The Woodlands also received the AHA’s Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Advanced Therapy award by meeting specific criteria that reduces the time between an eligible patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment to remove the clot causing the stroke.
Finally, several campuses were also recognized with the AHA’s Target: Type 2 Diabetes™ Honor Roll award that aims to offer patients with type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to stroke. These campuses included:
