General Information

Accredited in 1993, the Sleep Disorders Center was one of the first in the area to achieve accreditation by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The Center accepts patients of all ages, from neonates to the elderly. The Center’s affiliation with McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) allows for 24/7 access to a multidisciplinary team of physicians, and the evaluation of patients with simple sleep problems, such as daytime sleepiness and non-refreshing sleep, as well as complex conditions, including central sleep apnea, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and narcolepsy, and patients on ventilators.

The Sleep Disorders Center provides a safe environment for children and adults with significant heart, lung and neuromuscular disease. Affiliated physicians and highly skilled technologists have expertise in advanced methods of treatment for sleep-disordered breathing.

Those who require surgery after evaluation have access to surgical procedures to treat sleep apnea, including adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy, inferior turbinate reduction, maxillomandibular advancement, modified uvulopalatalpharyngoplasty, nasal septoplasty and valvuloplasty and tracheostomy. These procedures are performed by skilled surgeons with experience in treating trauma patients, as well as in performing cosmetic and elective surgery. Nonsurgical oral appliances are also available, including mandibular advancement appliances, which move the lower jaw forward slightly, tightening the soft tissue and muscles of the upper airway to prevent obstruction during sleep.

The Sleep Disorders Center operates under the direction of nationally and internationally recognized academic sleep specialists, who are involved in transformative research. It is also the focus of a physician training program in sleep medicine in collaboration with McGovern Medical School. The fellowship is one of the first such training programs in the country.
