Samit D. Soni, MD, graduated summa cum laude from the Chemical Engineering Honors program at The University of Texas at Austin in 2003. He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and completed his urology residency training at Baylor College of Medicine and Houston Methodist Hospital. Subsequently, he went on to complete fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery and endourology at Baylor College of Medicine.

Board certified in urology, Dr. Soni is a fellowship-trained urologist with a focus in complex robotic surgery and specializes in the treatment of cancers or tumors of the kidneys, prostate, ureters, bladder, adrenal glands and testes with robotic procedures as well as robotic ureteral reconstruction surgery, endoscopic and percutaneous surgery for complex and large kidney stones, robotic simple prostatectomy for enlarged prostate, laparoscopic nephrectomy for polycystic kidney disease and laparoscopic repair of varicocele.

Regarding the role of robotics in urologic cancer surgery, Dr. Soni explains, “There is an extremely small subset of cases in the current era that require open surgery, because robotic surgery by an experienced surgeon offers equivalent or potentially better cancer outcomes with significantly less morbidity and recovery time.” He is also passionate about surgical treatment and prevention of kidney stones and believes that focusing on stone prevention through metabolic testing is of utmost importance.

Prior to joining Memorial Hermann, Dr. Soni served as assistant professor of urology at Baylor College of Medicine for many years, where he developed and refined many minimally invasive surgical procedures. He also trained numerous medical students, residents and fellows on minimally invasive techniques. He received the Academic Faculty Teaching Award from the urology residents at Baylor College of Medicine. Over the years, he has refined various endoscopic and robotic surgeries and served as a course instructor for the North American Robotic Urology Symposium. He serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Urology and has authored numerous scientific papers, surgical training videos, and multiple book chapters, including the core curriculum of the American Urological Association. He has been an invited lecturer and presented at numerous regional and national urologic conferences.

Additionally, Dr. Soni serves as a board member of the Texas Urological Society and is involved with the development of novel robotic surgery platforms and their clinical trials. He has been recognized as a Top Urologist in Houston on multiple occasions and Texas Monthly’s Super Doctors’ Texas Rising Stars list for 2020 and 2021.

Because every patient’s situation is unique, Dr. Soni uses a personalized approach for each patient’s care, working in partnership with the patient and family to create an individualized treatment plan. He considers himself a strong patient advocate and stresses the importance of clear communication between the physician and patient. “I never want a patient to leave the office without a clear understanding of the problem at hand, and a detailed explanation of how we are going to address the issue. I place strong emphasis on ensuring that I communicate effectively and clearly and answer any lingering questions,” said Dr. Soni.

In his spare time, Dr. Soni enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, chasing his dogs, coaching, playing basketball, exercising, participating in outdoor activities and traveling.
