Dr. John Giannakis earned his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University Medical School in Portland, Oregon. He completed surgery and urology residencies at the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston, where he served as chief resident in urology.

In practice since 1992, Dr. Giannakis is board certified by the American Board of Urology. He is a member of the Houston Urologic Association, Harris County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, Texas Urological Association, Southern Urological Association and American Urological Association. He has been a clinical instructor in the Department of Surgery/Division of Urology at the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston and in the Department of Urology at the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston. He speaks fluent Greek.

Dr. Giannakis specializes in laser surgery, extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy and microvascular surgery. In addition to general urology, his areas of special interest are bladder pain (interstitial cystitis), UroLift treatment of BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia or enlarged prostate), erectile dysfunction causes and treatment, kidney stone diagnosis and treatment (lithotripsy), laparoscopic surgery, prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, urinary incontinence, no-scalpel vasectomy and microvascular vasectomy reversals.
