Dr. Justin McCarty, DO

Dr. Justin McCarty completed his plastic surgery residency at the Harvard Mass General Brigham Combined Residency Program after finishing general surgery training at Boston Medical Center- Brighton. He completed an advanced fellowship in hand, upper extremity, and microsurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and also earned a Master of Public Health in Clinical Effectiveness from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Board certified in general surgery and board eligible in plastic surgery, Dr. McCarty has been in practice since 2014 and treats patients of all ages. His practice encompasses the full spectrum of plastic and hand surgery, with expertise in complex upper and lower extremity reconstruction, microsurgery, and aesthetic facial surgery. He cares for patients with peripheral nerve injuries—including brachial plexus, nerve repair and grafting, targeted muscle reinnervation and neuroma management. He performs comprehensive hand and wrist surgery for fractures, tendon and ligament injuries, scaphoid nonunion and post-traumatic stiffness. He has extensive experience caring for patients who are upper and lower extremity amputees in terms of optimizing prosthetic fit, osteointegration, and optimizing patients for fitting with a myoelectric prosthesis. He also has interest in performing restorative surgery to optimize hand function for patients who have had spinal cord injuries or traumatic brain injuries and offers the full range of treatments including nerve transfers, tendon transfers, muscle releases, joint fusions, and complex free functional muscle flaps.

Dr. McCarty also offers innovative therapies such as denervation for patients suffering from pain from osteoarthritis or similar conditions, and he has extensive experience in complex limb salvage and reconstruction of extremities, including soft-tissue coverage, microsurgical free flaps (toe-to-hand flaps), replantation and management of fracture-related complications and functional muscle transfers. Additionally, he provides advanced facial reconstruction and rhinoplasty to restore both function and natural aesthetics.

His approach to care is patient-centered, thorough and collaborative. He takes time to listen, understand what matters to patients and explains the diagnosis and options in clear, straightforward language. He emphasizes shared decision-making and offers a full range of care, from nonoperative management and therapy to surgery tailored to a patient’s goals.

Dr. McCarty is a member of the American Association of Hand Surgery, American Society for Surgery of the Hand and American Society of Plastic Surgeons. A committed clinician-scientist, Dr. McCarty mentors trainees and contributes to surgical innovation and outcomes research. He has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as JAMA, JAMA Surgery, Annals of Surgery, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. His research spans nerve surgery, extremity reconstruction and salvage, microsurgery, and facial plastic surgery. His research has received funding from the Plastic Surgery Foundation and the Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Foundation. Annually during his training at Harvard, he received the Michael J. Yaremchuk Award for Academic Excellence.

When away from his practice, Dr. McCarty enjoys spending time with his wife, a pulmonary and critical care physician, and their son.
