Dr. Monique Canlas, DO

Pediatrician Dr. Alexis Monique Canlas treats patients from birth through adolescence for common childhood illnesses, including common colds, flu, conjunctivitis (pink eye), ear infections, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), gastroenteritis, sinusitis (sinus infection) and strep throat. She also provides well child examinations and immunizations. She speaks medical Spanish.

Dr. Canlas earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Houston, majoring in biology and minoring in medicine and society. She earned her medical degree at William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She completed her pediatrics residency at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

A life-long innate sense of calling drew Dr. Canlas to pediatrics, an area where she feels she can leave the world a better place. Believing that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” she focuses on preventative medicine and tries to keep her patients from getting sick in the first place.

Another major clinical interest is osteopathic manipulation, which utilizes hands-on treatments to help the body heal itself. In young patients, that approach can be used to alleviate pain, such as that caused by minor sports injuries.

Dr. Canlas is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians, Texas Pediatric Society and Texas Medical Association, and American Osteopathic Association.

In her leisure time, Dr. Canlas is active in dog rescue organizations and pet therapy. She owns a therapy dog, volunteers to provide pet therapy and fosters Great Pyrenees.
