Dr. Rui Yang earned his medical degree in China at Beijing Medical University and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Peking University People’s Hospital in Beijing. After he moved to the United States, he earned a master’s degree in biological sciences from Hunter College at the City University of New York. He completed a second residency in orthopedic surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, followed by a fellowship in orthopedic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Dr. Yang specializes in diagnosing and treating benign and malignant tumors of the musculoskeletal system, including primary bone tumors, soft tissue sarcomas and metastatic bone disease. His clinical interests include limb-sparing surgery, management of metastatic lesions to the skeleton and multidisciplinary treatment planning for sarcoma patients.

His practice approach reflects his commitment to providing individualized, evidence-based care for patients facing complex orthopedic oncology conditions. He works closely with oncologists, radiologists and other specialists to provide comprehensive and coordinated care.

Dr. Yang embraces the cutting-edge technology in his surgical practice, including utilization of customer-made cutting guide, and navigation for tumor resection, and patient specific implants for reconstruction. He is one of the pioneers who started minimally invasive surgery for patients with pelvic metastatic diseases.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Yang mentors medical students and orthopedic residents and contributes to tumor biology and oncologic reconstruction research. Author of more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters, he is often invited to present at national and international conferences.
