Native Houstonian Dr. Tamara Saunders earned her medical degree from the Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio and completed both her surgical internship and residency at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.

Dr. Saunders, who is board certified in surgery, treats breast cancer, high-risk breast abnormalities and benign breast diseases. She also performs risk-reduction surgeries for genetic mutations. Her clinical interests include providing individualized multidisciplinary treatments, managing high-risk pathology, monitoring high-risk patients and uncovering genetic mutations.

She uses oncoplastic techniques to achieve optimal oncologic and cosmetic outcomes and performs nipple-sparing mastectomies and axillary preservation procedures, when possible, to maintain her patients’ quality of life.

An associate professor of surgery at UTHealth Houston, Dr. Saunders is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Association of Women Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology and the Association of Academic Surgeons.

Her care philosophy focuses on educating patients so they can be actively involved in decisions about treatment. She believes in open communication and striving for excellent outcomes and develops personalized treatment plans based on each patient's unique condition.

In her free time, Dr. Saunders, the mother of four children, enjoys traveling, running, skiing and spending time with her family.
