Dr. Oscar Olavarria earned his medical degree at Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas. He completed his internship and residency in general surgery and a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.

In practice since 2013, Dr. Olavarria is board certified in surgery and treats patients ages 16 and older. He also speaks Spanish. His clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, bariatric and weight loss surgery, reflux and heartburn surgery, complex abdominal wall and hernia surgery, endoscopic surgery and general surgery.

Dr. Olavarria provides individualized care for complex general and bariatric surgery conditions through minimally invasive interventions. He approaches general and bariatric surgery conditions through a multidisciplinary approach, providing access to the latest technologies like robotic surgery and endoluminal surgery. He gained in-depth experience in revisional cases during his fellowship training.

His patients value his comprehensive and personalized care that focuses on enhancing their quality of life by improving their physical and emotional well-being.

An assistant professor of surgery at UTHealth Houston, Dr. Olavarria is also a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.

A resident of the Texas Medical Center area and Houston’s museum district, Dr. Olavarria is married and the father of a daughter. His favorite leisure activity is kitesurfing.
