Dr. Mahevish Virani is board certified in Family Medicine and earned her undergraduate degree in human development and family sciences at The University of Texas at Austin and her medical degree at American University of The Caribbean School of Medicine. She completed a sub-internship in family medicine at St. John Providence Hospital in Southfield, Mich., and a second sub-internship in internal medicine in Louisiana at Baton Rouge General Hospital. Her residency was completed at the UTHealth McGovern Medical School Family Medicine Program in Houston, TX. She holds certifications in advanced life support in obstetrics (ALSO), advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS), basic life support (BLS) and pediatric advanced life support (PALS).
Dr. Virani treats patients of all ages for all types of acute and chronic conditions, including diabetes and hypertension. She speaks Hindi, Urdu and English.
A lifelong enjoyment of puzzles and mysteries prompted Dr. Virani’s career as a physician. The human body, she observes, is complex and, like a puzzle, everything fits together, forming a whole. She uses an evidence-based approach to treating her patients—taking evidence and answers from well-designed studies and combining that knowledge with a patient’s preferences and her own expertise to come up with an individualized treatment plan.
Dr. Virani wants patients to feel that she listens to them, that she takes her time with them and that she cares. Those three elements are the basis of developing not only successful treatment plans, but also lasting relationships. In developing a diagnosis, she likes to spend time listening to patients – letting them tell her what’s going on – and then following with a thorough physical exam and supplemental lab tests when they are necessary.
The most rewarding parts of practicing medicine for Dr. Virani are its diversity—both in the conditions she treats and the patients she works with– and the long-term relationships she develops with patients.
Away from her practice, Dr. Virani enjoys cooking, especially recipes from various parts of the world, which is fun for both her and her family. When she’s not in the kitchen, she enjoys Mom-time, especially going to the park and reading to her young son.
