Dr. Antonius Gunawan, MD

Dr. Antonius (Tony) Gunawan earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Hackensack Hospital in Hackensack, N.J., followed by a fellowship in cardiology at the Texas Heart Institute-St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston.

Dr. Gunawan is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and critical care medicine. He is also a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and American College of Chest Physicians (FACCP).

He sees patients who have high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, palpitation, chest discomfort and other heart-related symptoms. His primary clinical interests include cardiovascular disease prevention and the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Gunawan’s philosophy of care starts with understanding why a patient has come to him—whether they’re feeling bad or they want to prevent disease. He analyzes what brings a patient to him and, using that information, plans his approach to treatment. He wants patients to feel he takes time and cares about them. Compassion is an important component of care, he believes, as is keeping up to date with rapidly evolving medical knowledge.

Dr. Gunawan is married and the father of three children.
