Dr. Akiko Tanaka earned her medical degree at Kobe University in Kobe, Japan, and a PhD from Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine. She completed a cardiovascular and congenital heart surgery residency and fellowship at Kobe University Hospital. She came to Houston for a residency in vascular surgery as well as a fellowship in aortic and structural heart surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.

Dr. Tanaka treats patients from age 14 through adulthood and also speaks Japanese. Her primary clinical interests are aortic disease, coronary artery disease, valve disease, peripheral vascular disease, carotid disease, dialysis access and venous disease.

She treats all types of aortic disease, from the aortic root to abdominal aorta and performs carotid endarterectomy, carotid angioplasty and stenting, open and endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, repair of peripheral and visceral arterial aneurysms, open surgical revascularization and limb salvage (upper and lower extremity revascularization).

Dr. Tanaka spends time talking with her patients and sharing diagrams that help them understand their conditions and treatment plans.

A resident of the Medical Center area, Dr. Tanaka enjoys indoor climbing in her leisure time.
