Advanced practice provider Tonye Lawson is a board-certified family nurse practitioner who has been a registered nurse since 2012 and a nurse practitioner since 2019. In addition to her board certification, Tonye has DEA prescriptive authority and is certified in basic life support.
Her primary clinical interest is cardiovascular disease. She is experienced in the management of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, and she has expertise in reducing cardiovascular risk.
After earning her Associate Degree in Nursing from Houston Community College, Tonye completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of Texas at Arlington and her Master of Science in Nursing-Family Nurse Practitioner from Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston.
Tonye decided to become a health care provider in honor of her father, who died unexpectedly when she was only 8. Later came the sudden, unexplained deaths of his two brothers, making her want to understand why people die suddenly at a young age, if they are aware of any medical conditions, if they have any symptoms, or if they just ignore their health.
At 18, she realized that a career in health care would not only answer some of those questions, but also allow her to educate people, give them an opportunity to better understand their health and motivate them to take preventative steps leading to more positive outcomes.
Patients, she believes, have an important role in their own health care and should be able to make informed decisions. She wants them to think of her as a kind, empathetic and attentive health care provider who makes them feel seen and heard. The most rewarding part of her career is realizing that the time she spends with her patients makes a difference in their lives.
Away from her practice, Tonye enjoys reading books and watching true crime dramas, and most important, spending time with her family.
