Memorial Hermann Health System is proud to announce that president and CEO, David L. Callender, MD, has been named for the fourth consecutive year to Modern Healthcare’s “The Most Influential People in Healthcare.”
The publication’s annual list honors passionate, forward-thinking leaders from government, business and the nonprofit sector deemed by their peers and the senior editors of Modern Healthcare to have driven innovative, effective and sustainable transformation across the health care industry.
“I am honored to be included among these distinguished, mission-driven leaders who are advancing the future of health care,” said Dr. Callender. “I am also very pleased and extraordinarily fortunate to work with more than 35,000 employees and 7,000 employed and affiliated physicians and providers at Memorial Hermann who are relentless in delivering upon our mission to improve health in the communities we serve through high-quality, patient-centric, value-focused care.”
Since joining Memorial Hermann as president and CEO in 2019, Dr. Callender has established a strategic framework to enable Memorial Hermann and the entire health care system to create value for patients and populations; that is, delivering the greatest outcomes at an optimal cost, creating exceptional experiences for patients and a fulfilling work environment for its workforce and improving health access across Greater Houston.
Memorial Hermann’s most notable achievements include accelerating value-focused care, expanding services across a rapidly growing region, deploying innovative AI tools and advancing workforce development through expanded education partnerships that create meaning career pathways for employees. In FY25, Memorial Hermann also provided $486 million in community contributions and charity care.
“Influence can be exerted in many ways, but regardless of whether it is used to internally shape organizations, the health care industry as a whole, or both, playing a positive role benefits patients and the professionals responsible for their health,” said Mary Ellen Podmolik, editor-in-chief of Modern Healthcare. “Our ranked list of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare highlights the executives in all corners of the industry who are striving to advance medicine and how care is delivered — and succeeding in doing so.”
