HOUSTON (July 13, 2012)

Houston's leading authority on sports medicine - Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute - is expanding outside of the Texas Medical Center with the opening of a second location at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center on July 16.

"For the past five years, we've been building a top-notch orthopedic program the community can trust and we're excited to announce that we are expanding our reach with the opening of the Memorial City location," said Walt Lowe, MD, chairman of orthopaedic surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School and medical director of the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute. "The IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute location at Memorial City will bring residents of West Houston comprehensive orthopedic care that is close to home."

The 22,000-square-foot facility, located on the Katy Freeway eastbound feeder road between Frostwood Drive and Gessner Road, is a collaboration between Memorial Hermann Health System and UTHealth. It will offer physician services, physical therapy and X-ray diagnostics under one roof. The facility also will provide convenient access to other medical services on the Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center campus, including outpatient imaging, as well as a streamlined referral process for performance improvement services that are currently offered only at the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center location.

"Patients can expect high-quality, sport-specific care for athletes of all abilities and ages, from teens to active seniors," said orthopedic surgeon Peter Sabonghy, MD, director of the new location and a team physician for the Houston Rockets and select Houston and Spring Branch Independent School Districts schools. "Memorial Hermann's vast resources, state-of-the-art facilities and leading-edge technology will enable us to provide the complete spectrum of care that athletes need to stay active in the sports they enjoy."

Like the flagship location in the Texas Medical Center, the IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center will be staffed by UT Physicians - fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons who also serve on the faculty of UTHealth. Dr. Sabonghy specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and knee and minimally-invasive joint and shoulder replacement. He will be joined by Stephen Simonich, MD, knee and shoulder specialist and team physician for Katy Taylor High School, and Richard Beaver, MD, foot and ankle specialist. Additional physicians will join the team in the coming months, including shoulder and knee specialist Frank Alexander "Alex" Schroeder, MD and Andrew Choo, MD, who specializes in shoulder and elbow and orthopedic trauma.
