For the third time, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has awarded Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute-Memorial City its highest rating of three stars for quality related to Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), or heart bypass surgery.
“Receiving this recognition for the third time shows our unwavering commitment to high-quality and safe cardiac surgery,” said Paul O’Sullivan, Sr. Vice President and CEO of Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center. “Patients can rest easy knowing our program is among the best in the nation.”
The STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database is the world’s premier clinical registry for cardiac surgery. It gathers information from more than 90 percent of the groups that perform cardiac surgery in the United States and places Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute-Memorial City in the top 10 percent of Cardiovascular Surgery Programs in the country.
The STS composite quality rating is based on a combination of 11 National Quality Forum-endorsed heart bypass surgery processes and outcomes measures. These measures rate the performance of heart surgery programs in four areas: Avoidance of Operative Mortality; Avoidance of Major Morbidity; High Quality Intra-Operative Care; and Appropriate Perioperative Medication Usage.
The institute was first awarded the STS 3-star rating in 2014.
