HOUSTON (March 24, 2008)

Grammy award-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira remains in critical condition at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center (TMC). Navaira sustained an acute subdural hematoma, a severe injury to the brain, and underwent emergency surgery on Sunday morning at Memorial Hermann-TMC. Navaira was admitted at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 23.

"At this stage, we are monitoring his progress," said Alex Valadka, MD, Navaira's attending physician. "Mr. Navaira is in a medically induced coma, and his body temperature is being cooled for 48 hours to help treat the brain injury."

Dr. Valadka is vice chairman of neurotrauma services at Memorial Hermann-TMC and vice chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
