HOUSTON (October 07, 2024)

Guided by its vision to create healthier communities, now and for generations to come, Memorial Hermann Health System has completed its transition to a single, integrated electronic health record (EHR) and revenue cycle management system. As of Oct. 5, the Epic system is live across each of the health system’s 17 hospitals and more than 250 care delivery sites.

“This is a defining moment in our organization’s history,” said Dr. David L. Callender, president and CEO of Memorial Hermann. “Through this digital transformation, we are accelerating our shift to a value-focused delivery model, further ensuring high-reliability, and ultimately humanizing the experience of our patients by better engaging them in their health care journeys.”

Epic brings registration, scheduling and billing into a single system, making it easier for patients to find a physician and schedule their appointments. Because it also helps with hospital and physician coding, patients will now receive a single billing statement across the organization – spanning both professional services and hospital fees. In addition, the new system provides a more centered focus on the patient’s journey across the care continuum, improving interoperability and helping to strengthen the relationship between patients and their health care providers.

“By providing physicians, nurses and other clinicians with one integrated system, we’re better able to manage complex medical information and improve clinical outcomes, while also ensuring patients receive a consistent experience whenever they engage with us for their health care needs,” said Dr. Jamie McCarthy, executive vice president and chief physician executive of Memorial Hermann, who was also the system’s executive sponsor for the Epic implementation.

The transition to Epic also brings with it a new patient portal, My Memorial Hermann™, which provides a seamless digital experience for patients, helping them connect to their care faster and making it easier to manage their health, all in one place, at their fingertips.

With the new app, patients will be able to:

  • View lab, test and imaging results
  • See upcoming and past appointments, as well as schedule future in-person or virtual care appointments (including same-day or next-day appointments)
  • Find affiliated physicians and locations
  • Send secure messages directly to their care team
  • Complete patient forms before their appointments
  • Access account statements and securely pay their bills
  • Receive automated health reminders
  • Plus, access educational information, videos and other virtual resources

“Transforming our system with a new technology foundation touched more than 40,000 employees and clinicians,” said Amanda Hammel, senior vice president and chief information officer for the system. “This was a monumental effort, but one that we feel will greatly benefit our patients by allowing our care teams to spend more time with them as we aim to provide more compassionate, personalized experiences for all.”
