Dr. Tugrul Purnak is an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at McGovern Medical School. He earned his medical degree from Ankara University in Ankara, Turkey. He then completed an internal medicine residency at Hacettepe University Medical School in Ankara and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Ankara Numune Education and Research Hospital.

After receiving additional training in endoscopic retrograde holangiopancreatography (ERCP) at Indiana University Medical School in Indianapolis, Ind., Dr. Purnak developed and refined his interest in the evaluation and management of liver disorders. He has a special interest in autoimmune disorders, specifically autoimmune hepatitis and autoimmune biliary diseases such as primary biliary cholangiopathy and chronic sclerosing cholangitis.

Dr. Purnak’s research interests lie in the medical management and diagnosis of patients with these and other chronic liver disorders, and he is a key faculty member of the transplant hepatology service. He is an active participant in multiple gastroenterological societies and has been involved in various leadership roles during his medical education and training. Dr. Purnak is currently a fellow of the European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
