Patients travel from all over the world to Memorial Hermann for evaluation and treatment of neurological disorders. Offering an entire spectrum of neurological care from diagnostics to surgery, treatment is available for traumatic brain injury, stroke, epilepsy, tumors and other conditions affecting the brain and nervous system.
The Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is the leading medical establishment in the Southwestern United States for diagnosing and treating patients of all ages for seizures and epilepsy. Program features include an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit as well as the use of Vagus Nerve Stimulation Implant. This "pacemaker for the brain" emits electrical pulses to prevent and subdue seizures.
Advanced technology like MEG (magnetoencephalography) is used to evaluate surgical risks of patients associated with brain tumors to help determine strategies to minimize those risks. It is also used to determine which epilepsy patients are candidates for surgery. Basic and clinical research on the mechanisms of epilepsy is conducted in collaboration with scientists at The University of Texas Health Science Center.
The Stroke Treatment Center utilizes revolutionary imaging techniques that allow for earlier and more precise diagnosis of stroke and high-risk patients. A primary testing site for tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), the first promising stroke treatment approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, the Memorial Hermann Stroke Treatment Center has spearheaded stroke research for more than 15 years, helping to dramatically improve patient survival rates.
A focus on Parkinson's disease is driving an innovative new procedure to treat patients suffering from this disorder. Memorial Hermann is one of only a few hospitals offering this technology. During the procedure, surgeons implant two devices, similar to cardiac pacemakers, that deliver electrical stimulation to precisely targeted areas within each side of the brain. As a result, many patients achieve greater control over body movements and are able to decrease medications. Another specialty program, the Pallidotomy Program, utilizes a mapping technique to strategically locate and destroy overactive cells causing Parkinson's symptoms. Pallidotomy is helpful for patients who are no longer experiencing satisfactory results with medications or who cannot tolerate them
Neurosurgeons employ advanced technologies in the operating room, including Gamma Knife® Radiosurgery, an alternative treatment that uses gamma rays to destroy tumors associated with small to mid-sized brain tumors, blood vessel abnormalities and pain from trigeminal neuralgia, a severe facial pain disorder.
Our neurology services include a comprehensive program of Electroneurodiagnostic Testing ranging from routine Electroencephalograms (EEGs) to evoked potential testing. Electroneurodiagnostic Testing is the study and recording of electrical activity in the brain and nervous system. Tests include EEG, Sleep Deprived EEG, Video EEG, Electromyography (EMG), Evoked Potentials (EP), Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP), Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEP) and Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP/SEPM).
Dedicated to providing exceptional care in pediatric neurology, pediatric neurologists and nurses are able to diagnose and treat a broad range of disorders from the common to the complex and rare. Major areas of focus include treatment of epilepsy, brain tumors, spina bifida, head trauma, neuromuscular disease, movement disorders, craniofacial disorders, hydrocephalus, neurofibromatosis, cerebral palsy and sleep disorders.
