ABPTRFE Accreditation

We are proud to announce that Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Residency Programs have recently achieved re-accreditation for a term of 10 years from the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE). Because of the rarity of 10-year terms for re-accreditation, our long-term accreditation period signifies a huge accomplishment and indicates the validation of our residency programs. Over the past 7 years, our residency programs have grown exponentially in capacity, stature and reputation due to the passion and dedication of our residency and research leadership team, faculty and residents.

The program boasts many accomplishments that are helping to advance sports medicine and orthopedic care in our region and beyond:

  1. Graduated and enhanced the careers of over 70 residents in the past 9 years.
  2. Achieved a 100% pass rate on both the OCS and SCS since the existence of the program.
  3. Grew from 2 residency sites with 4 residents to 12 residency sites with 14 residents in 9 years.
  4. Expanded the number of qualified faculty from five members to more than 50 members.
  5. Developed research databases incorporated with our Upper Extremity, Knee, Spine and Hip Preservation Programs.
  6. Produced 40 national research presentations, participated in 9 research projects and was published in eight publications from 2014-2022.
  7. Expanded our outreach from 1 local college and high school to 3 local colleges and 8 local high schools.
  8. Enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration with UTHealth and Memorial Hermann Mischer Neurosciences along with our athletic training outreach team and outside entities such as Athlete Training and Health, Texas Woman’s University, UTMB and HCC.
  9. Developed the first Texas Residency Symposium, inviting residency programs across Texas to share ideas and research while introducing our residents and faculty to a wider network of professionals.
