The Children’s Memorial Hermann-TMC PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency program will be scheduling interviews via the Personnel Placement Service (PPS) at the ASHP Midyear Conference. We will also offer one-on-one screening interviews and information sessions for interested candidates via Zoom.
If you are unable to schedule a PPS interview but would like to schedule a virtual Zoom interview, please contact Shannan Eades, PharmD, BCPPS at shannan.eades@memorialhermann.org to schedule your 30 minute session. We look forward to providing you with more information about our program, hospital, and Houston!
PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.
Our graduates will be confident, well-rounded clinical pharmacists who are able to care for acutely ill neonatal and pediatric patients in multiple practice settings. Our graduates will have the teaching, precepting, and administrative skills necessary to pursue clinical positions in an academic environment, including involvement with schools of pharmacy or academic teaching hospitals.
At Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, part of the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center campus, we provide our residents with the experience needed to practice as highly-skilled clinical pharmacists in an acute care setting. Our residents train under the supervision of experienced clinical pharmacy specialists in the care of premature infants, toddlers, older children, and adolescents. Our residents complete a teaching certificate program and gain valuable precepting experience by working with pharmacy students during their APPE rotations. We challenge our residents by setting high expectations to help them maximize their residency experience and to make them highly competitive candidates for clinical pharmacist positions in academic teaching hospitals.
At 278 beds, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital is one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the country and contains a dedicated pediatric emergency center and the largest Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in Houston fully equipped to treat pediatric patients. In addition to general pediatric, pediatric sub-specialty, pediatric transplant (heart, kidney and liver), the hospital has a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, providing neonatal critical care services to infants and premature babies born as early as 23 weeks’ gestation. We also have a 22-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a 20-bed Heart Center Intensive Care Unit.
PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residents will be exposed to a broad range of experiences and activities intended to build the skills necessary to practice as a clinical pharmacist in the pediatric setting. Residents are required to complete an orientation month, along with 8 month-long rotations. The remaining months will consist of a research project month and 2 month-long elective rotations.
Residents will conduct a research project throughout their residency year that includes presenting the results at the PPAG annual conference and preparing a written manuscript. Presentation skills will be enhanced by giving an ACPE-accredited seminar presentation along with other formal presentations throughout the year. Residents will also gain experience with teaching and precepting through the completion of a Teaching Certificate program and co-precepting pharmacy students on clinical rotations.
