Patients considered candidates for epilepsy surgery will be referred to a neurosurgeon affiliated with Mischer Neuroscience Institute. Pre-surgical evaluations can include memory, speech and neuropsychological testing.
The WADA test is performed on patients being considered for surgery. It is used to identify the language and memory functions of the left and right brain.
Neuropsychological testing is used to determine if seizures have changed areas of brain function such as memory, language, math skills or personality.
Another potentially beneficial treatment for epilepsy patients is VNS, in which a stimulator is implanted to deliver regular, mild pulses of electrical energy to the brain and reduce seizures.
The Mischer Neuroscience Institute was the first in the region to perform VNS implantation and is the leading program in the United States, performing the largest number of epilepsy surgeries on pediatric and adult patients in Houston.
Known as laser ablation, a MR-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRgLITT) is an innovative technology that offers physicians and patients a precise, minimally invasive surgical intervention for the treatment of well-delineated focal epilepsies.
For patients for whom conventional or laser surgery is not a treatment option, the Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Program also offers an innovative responsive neurostimulation therapy with the NeuroPace RNS®. The RNS® System is a device that is implanted in the skull and connected to electrodes targeting the region of the brain called the hippocampus. Upon identifying any abnormal brain activity, the RNS® System responds to interrupt the signal and help control the patient’s seizures.
