When dealing with a work-related injury, comprehensive and integrated care is essential to helping workers get back to their lives as quickly as possible. Our complete continuum of care includes interdisciplinary treatment teams at our acute rehabilitation hospitals, as well as outpatient rehabilitation locations throughout Greater Houston.
We believe that rehabilitation medicine works best when multiple disciplines come together to collaborate on goals and track patient progress. Injured workers are seen by a variety of different providers that may include:
Inpatient therapy (at our acute rehabilitation hospitals) aims to help patients recover lost movement and learn functional skills using hands-on techniques. Effective progress is made through both individual and group therapy sessions that support the physical, cognitive and psychosocial needs of each patient. Therapy is available seven days a week.
Our specialized rehabilitation staff provides care to help outpatients develop the skills they need to return to work. Injured workers are seen by providers that include occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech-language pathologists.
The Challenge Program provides a comprehensive range of services for brain-injury patients to maximize their potential during recovery. Specialized services focus on community-reintegration skills, physical abilities, memory strategies, interpersonal communication, problem-solving skills, neuropsychological services, counseling and vocational services needed for long-term success.
Our program has a 20-year track record of success of helping injured workers return to work. On average, patients participate in the Challenge Program for four months, and our outcome studies show that 90% of patients meet their work goals upon completion of the program. We are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
The philosophy of therapy at TIRR Memorial Hermann is to promote recovery of lost movement in addition to teaching functional skills.
Rehabilitation has rapidly expanded, permitting many people with injuries or disabilities to achieve far greater levels of function and independence than previously thought possible.
Our program provides a comprehensive range of services to help patients maximize their potential through each step of recovery.
TIRR Memorial Hermann provides rehabilitation for people with brain injuries of all levels of severity. Our highly specialized team has extensive experience with the full range of injuries, including traumatic brain injury (TBI), non-traumatic brain injury as well as brain injury combined with bodily injury, such as spinal-cord injury, multiple fractures or amputations.
Our comprehensive, interdisciplinary team of dedicated physicians, neuropsychologists, therapists, nurses, case managers and social workers creates a plan to help patients recover lost skills and cognitive function, as well as manage their post-injury life. Depending on the type of brain injury, patients will have access to services such as inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, a medical follow-up clinic and a wellness program.
Our Disorders of Consciousness program provides treatment for patients who are unconscious, minimally conscious or have recently recovered consciousness but cannot communicate consistently. By assessing the patient’s level of consciousness, evaluating treatable medical or neurological barriers to recovering consciousness and improving alertness through medications and other therapeutic interventions, we can maximize their potential recovery while closely monitoring for—and preventing—complications that could negatively impact their progress.
The complexity of spinal cord injuries requires a health care team with highly specialized skills, access to the latest research findings and experience with leading-edge treatment options. At TIRR Memorial Hermann, we treat more than 300 spinal cord-injury patients each year at our inpatient facilities and many others on an ongoing, outpatient basis. We were one of the first facilities in the U.S. to establish a Spinal Cord Injury Center, and we are nationally recognized for our expertise in managing all levels of spinal cord injury.
We focus on providing adaptive and neuro-recovery rehabilitation that addresses both the physical and emotional impact of a spinal cord injury. The goal is to maximize quality of life with increased personal independence and a maximum state of health.
When advanced respiratory support is necessary for patients with brain or spinal cord injuries, our respiratory therapy team is specially trained to meet their unique needs. The team includes more than 20 respiratory therapists with advanced knowledge in tracheostomy management and progression, who utilize evidence-based medication, volume expansion and secretion clearance pathways to optimize lung health. Respiratory therapists and hospitalists are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Patients requiring mechanical ventilation have unique needs, depending on their specific type of injury. To successfully address these different needs, we have developed a specialized ventilator-weaning pathway for brain-injury patients as well as a specialized pathway for spinal cord injuries. Patients are evaluated for ventilator weaning and once initiated, we aim for daily progress in conjunction with customized therapy and cognitive rehabilitation. Our nationally recognized ventilator-weaning pathway for spinal cord-injury patients has a greater than 97% success rate in weaning patients from the ventilator prior to discharge. Ventilator maintenance and tracheostomy training are also available for caregivers who will take care of their loved one at home.
The goal of the Amputee and Limb Loss Program is to prepare patients physically and emotionally to cope with the traumatic loss of a limb. We understand that this is a difficult journey, requiring facing the reality of missing a limb along with the functional limitations and adjustments that will most likely come with it.
Rehabilitation includes a pre-prosthetic program and prosthetic training, when appropriate. Our clinical treatment team is internationally recognized and has extensive experience with patients with upper-limb loss, lower-limb loss and multiple amputations. To ensure the most comprehensive care possible, our multidisciplinary team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, physical and occupational therapists as well as specialty physicians.
Our osseointegration (OI) program allows patients with above-knee amputations—who are unable to wear a prosthesis—to walk more comfortably for longer periods of time and get back to living a more full and vibrant life. We are one of the few programs in the nation to combine the highly specialized OI implant surgery with an award-winning, long-term rehabilitation program to help provide optimal outcomes.
Patients who are recovering from burns need a comprehensive program that cares for the whole person, by addressing the physical, social and emotional impacts of their injury. We aim to help patients recover to their fullest possible potential and transition back to their homes and community.
Our inpatient and outpatient burn rehabilitation programs incorporate an integrated approach to individual and group therapy sessions with training for patients, families and caregivers as well as discharge planning for sustained success. We provide rehabilitation for a range of burn injuries, including thermal burns, chemical burns, electrical burns and radiological burns.
